Pre-Student Teaching Experiences

Acceptance into an accredited National Louis University teacher certification program requires that students participate in 100 hours of school site or clinical experiences under the guidance of a cooperating teacher.

The Illinois State Board of Education defines clinical experiences "as that part of the professional preparation program enabling candidates preparing for certificated roles to acquire practical experience along with theoretical knowledge prior to entering into the full responsibilities of the role for which they are seeking certification." Candidates are expected to demonstrate beginning (Practicum I) or continuing (Practicums II & III) competencies in specific categories. Undergraduate student participate in Practicums I, II, and III while graduate student requirements include only Practicum I & II.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is the culmination of all the coursework, observations, and certification requirements of the National College of Education and the state of Illinois. In effect, it is the final exam that tests for everything that goes before you enter the teaching profession. Therefore, the Office of Field Experiences' clinical placement staff looks to carefully place each student in a school environment that is enriching, diverse, and supportive.

The clinical placement coordinators with your advisors and teachers want to help you through the application process, support you during the student teaching experience, and celebrate with you as you become the teacher of young people you've set out to be.

Student Teaching Scholarship

If you are planning to student teach soon, you might wish to apply for the Patricia Cassin Graft Student Teacher Assistance Fund which is currently seeking to award $4,000 in tuition assistance awards to graduate or undergraduate NCE students.     NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. Parking is free at this recently remodeled and upgraded teaching site, which now includes wireless Internet access.

  • NORTH SHORE

    Opened in the summer of 2006, NLU North Shore at Skokie is a state-of-the-art modern campus located just off the Edens Expressway near the Old Orchard Shopping Center. The campus includes 44 wireless classrooms equipped with high-tech media equipment; four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, including a walk-in lab in the library; six conference rooms; a public café for beverages and snacks; a student welcome center; a library for research and study; and multiple, comfortable student lounge areas.

    Located in one of Chicago's major northwest suburbs, the newly renovated NLU Wheeling includes 20 classrooms with high-tech media equipment, four conference rooms, four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, large student lounge areas with wireless capabilities and interactive video capabilities, and an extensive research library. The site also houses the university library research collection.
