For more than 125 years, National Louis University's National College of Education (NCE) has been a training ground for early childhood, special education, elementary and secondary school teachers. Whether you're considering teaching as a first-time career or looking for a career change, the NCE will help you develop the creative, organizational and assessment skills you need to be successful.
NCE’s faculty balances the practical aspects of work in schools with the importance of research, enabling you to increase your knowledge while participating in powerful learning experiences. Students in NLU teacher preparation programs bring the best educational practices into the classroom and make a difference in the lives of students.

What Students Learn with NLU Teaching Degrees
In any of our teacher preparation programs, students are given a strong foundation of teaching skills to apply in the classroom from day one. You’ll graduate not only with presentation and lesson-planning skills, but also with an understanding of children’s learning differences and how to best reach them. In addition, faculty members are connected within the field, and the career services team is dedicated to matching students with employment opportunities.
Why NLU’s Teaching Degree Programs
At NLU we understand that students have busy lives outside the classroom, so we make our programs flexible to fit your schedule. Students can take full- or part-time, daytime or evening classes. We make obtaining teaching degrees convenient, faster and easier. NLU graduates have been awarded more Golden Apple Awards — the most prestigious teaching honor in the state of Illinois — than graduates from any other school of education.
Preparing You for Teacher Certification
By junior year, education undergraduate students must register for the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) before being formally admitted to their teaching program. NLU offers students free TAP study workshops to help prepare for this important test on the road to attaining teacher certification.
