Transitioning to a new career is exciting but can also be intimidating, and can be especially so for veterans. With nine years of U.S. Air Force experience, Natalyia Manning, a National Louis University student who has just recently graduated with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management, knows first-hand about the additional challenges veterans face when moving from a military career to a civilian one.

Writers' Week Workshop 2016

July 23 • 10am-5pm
National Louis University, Chicago campus

 

Individuals interested in writing are invited to attend Writers’ Week Workshop on a non-credit basis at a cost of $30 per session, or $100 for all four sessions, including the Saturday box lunch for July 23. Register as a non-credit participant below or by emailing CASWRITERS@nl.edu or calling National Louis University at 312.261.3010.

One semester hour of graduate credit, or two quarter hours of undergraduate credit for Writers’ Week Workshops(previous workshop on 7/16), awarded through the College of Professional Studies and Advancement to students in any NLU or other university program, can be earned by registering online or in person for LAE 486B at the special rate of $360. You may also inquire about registration for credit by emailing Joanne Koch, director of the Master of Science in Written Communication Program at jkoch@nl.edu.

Complimentary box lunch with the authors will be held Saturday, July 23 from 1-2pm for all those who register for workshops both days (7/16 was first date in this series). Workshops will be held at the Chicago Campus, 122 S. Michigan Avenue, in the second floor atrium.

Each workshop leader will spend an opening portion on his/her own work and the writing process involved. Workshop leaders will devote much of the session to work submitted. Attendees should email in advance a brief piece of writing — not more than a page — for each workshop. To assure consideration of your work, email the submission to jkoch@nl.edu with a subject line including Writers’ Week Workshop and the workshop leader’s name.

July 23

  • For the Saturday morning Finding Your Voice Workshop with author of "Only Twice I’ve Wished for Heaven" and columnist Dawn Turner Trice, submit a page of fiction or nonfiction writing, indicating whether for general readers or young adults.
  • For the Saturday afternoon Nonfiction and Memoir Workshop with Fern Schumer Chapman, author of "Motherland," submit a page of nonfiction or memoir connected to a person you have known.

Submitted work will be distributed to attendees and the workshop leader will comment on some of the submissions, suggesting areas for revision. Attendees will participate in this feedback and have time for questions and answers.

Strong computer skills with Excel are required. Experience with SPSS (STATA or SAS is valuable). Experience and an affinity with Microsoft Office Suite. Basic programming knowledge beneficial. Such aptitudes make for excellent administrators in Long-Term Care, a dramatically growing field with excellent prospects for well-paying employment. National Louis University is launching a concentration in Long-Term Care, starting in Fall 2016, that will prepare students to sit for accreditation exams and pursue career opportunities as administrators of assisted living, nursing care and rehabilitation facilities.
