Millennium Scholar - a student who is committed to making long lasting change by using their knowledge of education.
The Millennium Scholars Fund was established in 2000 by outgoing NLU trustee and National College of Education alum Beverly Shaw and her late husband, Charles.
The Millennium Scholars Fund provides scholarship assistance to NCE students pursuing graduate degrees in Reading, Special Education, or Bilingual Education. The Millennium Scholarship is competitive in nature and each application goes through several rounds of review by faculty committee.
If awarded the distinction of Millennium Scholar, you will be required to commit to teaching in low-income schools in Chicago (either public or parochial) for two years following graduation. Individual awards are typically $4,500 and are intended to cover six hours of tuition in NCE. The fund does not provide cash awards. Recipients of the award receive a credit to their account at National-Louis to offset the cost of tuition.
To apply for the Millennium Scholarship, please complete the following:
- The Millennium Scholars Application (Microsoft Word Format)
- An essay* not to exceed 2,500 words explaining
- Why you want to be considered for the Millennium Scholars program,
- Why you want to teach in Chicago,
- And why you are interested in the program you are in (Reading, Special Education, or Bilingual Education).
- If you are currently employed as a teacher, please also include a letter of recommendation from your school principal.
Once you have completed the above items, please submit them to:
- stscholarships@nl.edu (preferred) or
- Stacey Pitts
National-Louis University
122 S. Michigan Ave
Chicago, IL 60603
Applications are considered based on commitment to urban teaching, potential for leadership in the field, and current involvement in NLU or community programs that benefit educational advancements. The fund makes awards on an ongoing basis throughout the year, however monies awarded are intended for tuition towards the end of a student's program.
