A Day with Cris Tovani

When: April 15, 2015  8:30am - 5:00pm

Topic: Who's Doing What During Workshop Model?

When planning with Workshop Model in mind, some teachers will say, "I need more than a 15 minute mini-lesson to cover everything!" All teachers do. Some teachers perceive Workshop Model as an activity and worry that using it regularly will prevent them from covering all the content and curriculum they are expected to teach.  For Cris Tovani, Workshop Model keeps her honest and keeps her from doing all the work.

Workshop Model is a planning and assessing structure that gives teachers a chance to assess-teach-assess-and then re-adjust instruction.  When teachers plan and assess with Workshop Model, they have the opportunity to see what kids know and need.  This gives them the opportunity to adjust their instruction so more students can be successful.  When planning and assessing with Workshop Model, teachers still teach the entire class period. They just don't teach the whole class the same thing at the same time.

During this daylong workshop, Cris will walk teachers through the thinking strategies of questioning and inferring.  She will show where they sit within the Workshop Model and how they help students re-engage and think about complex text.  Participants will study diagrams that demonstrate what teachers and students can do during the different workshop segments.
