RLL 529 Teaching Through Informational Books, K-12 (1sh)
On Saturday, April 12, participants will be attending the Spring Institute held at the Center for Teaching through Children’s Books. Dr. Marc Aronson will use his experience as a historian and author to show teachers and librarians how to meet the Common Core focus on Informational Texts, critical reading and inquiry-based learning. The Institute is $100 per person (included registration fee, coffee and lunch). Participants can register by contacting Junko Yokota and Toby Rajput at CTCB@nl.edu.
Participants will explore a wide variety of informational texts that can be used in educational settings including high-quality, diverse, and developmentally appropriate books, Web sites, and magazines forchildren and adolescents (K-12). Defining characteristics and criteria for evaluating these texts for accuracy, authenticity, organization, format, design, and writing style will be shared and discussed as well as teaching with these texts to meet the Illinois Learning Standards. Elements of a thematic unit will be presented and participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of how to plan a unit that includes teaching students how to think critically about these texts.
Prerequisite(s): Basic children’s literature course such as RLL 520, or consent of instructor.
2 Saturdays, 4/5 & 4/12, 9 AM to 3 PM each day, plus online instruction.
