In this hands-on workshop, teachers working in small groups are actively engaged in using proven instructional strategies, motivational techniques, and activities for Grades 4-8 that foster a deep understanding of key foundational concepts that are used and applied in the study of algebra. The structural basis for the course is the "Progress to Algebra in Grades K-8" document from the K-8 Publishers' Criteria for Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, 2013. Connections are made to arithmetic number concepts to illustrate that algebra can be viewed as "generalized arithmetic." Real-world applications are used throughout to illustrate why the study of algebra is important.
