Applications

  1. Applications are accepted throughout the academic year. Interviews are conducted, and decisions for the following school year are made between January 6 and July 30. 
  2. Application materials for 2014-15 are available for download here. Requests for mailed application forms are accepted by calling (224) 233-2670 or sending an email to sharagdon@nl.edu.

Admissions Criteria

Criteria for admission to the P.A.C.E. program include:

  1. Student is between the age of 18 and 30.
  2. Student has identified learning disabilities that have interfered with school performance throughout his or her academic career.
  3. Student has a measured I.Q. between 55 and 90 (I.Q.s outside of range are considered within context of supporting materials).
  4. Student has a high probability of difficulty if enrolled in a standard college curriculum, even with the provision of various support services.
  5. Student is interested and able to participate in group learning and living without adult supervision. 
  6. Student has family members who are actively involved in partnering with their adult child to support independence. 

Admissions Procedures

  1. Student and parent/guardian must complete a tour of the campus that includes the residence hall, class visits, as well as a meeting with current students.
  2. In addition to the application packet, supporting materials must include
    1. Student’s high school transcript
    2. Student’s I.E.P or 504 plan
    3. Recent (within 18 months of application) psychological reports which include written results and interpretations of the following:
      1. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Revised)
      2. Peabody Individual Achievement Test (Revised) or comparable achievement battery
      3. Projective Testing (Rorschach, T.A.T.) or comparable personality assessment tool
      4. $40 application fee
  3. Upon receipt of application and supporting materials, the admission committee determines whether to extend an invitation to the candidate and a parent/guardian to interview on campus.
  4. Parent and candidate participate in separate on campus interviews to discuss program goals and compatibility. The campus interview may then be scheduled with the applicant and at least one parent.
  5. Admission decisions are made within one month of interview. The committee’s decision are sent by U.S. Mail.
  6. Students accepted into the program are asked to acknowledge their decision to attend by letter and, upon receipt, preparations will begin for their arrival on campus.

    NLU’s Chicago campus on South Michigan Avenue occupies five floors of the historic Peoples Gas Building. This landmark building, across the street from the Art Institute of Chicago and Grant Park, is easily accessible by train, bus and car and is surrounded by restaurants, parking lots/garages and shops.

  • ELGIN

    Opened in the summer of 2006, NLU North Shore at Skokie is a state-of-the-art modern campus located just off the Edens Expressway near the Old Orchard Shopping Center. The campus includes 44 wireless classrooms equipped with high-tech media equipment; four computer labs with high-speed Internet access, including a walk-in lab in the library; six conference rooms; a public café for beverages and snacks; a student welcome center; a library for research and study; and multiple, comfortable student lounge areas.
