National Louis University Faculty Experts on State of the Union Address

National Louis University faculty are available to the media to break down President Barack Obama's messaging in the 2011 State of the Union Address.  For assistance on setting up interviews, please contact Robert Schroeder via email at robert.schroeder@nl.edu or via phone at 312-261-3825.

Ted Purinton, Assistant Professor, National College of Education

On Obama's education proposals:  "What I didn't really get a sense of from this speech, nor have I received that message from the other speeches of Arne Duncan and Obama on education is the kinds of support that teachers should be getting, the issues of funding for schools that are out of balance and increasingly out of balance between high-wealth and low-wealth districts.  I'm worried that some of these messages will perpetuate themselves as the only option for fixing our schools."

On the economy:  "There will be some sort of middle ground; he's showed he can already do that with the tax cuts.  He'll be a more popular president by being forced to compromise.  I think what the country wants to see is centrist legislation, more compromising and less bad blood between the parties."

On health care:  "A hot button for Republican contention is that members of the Congressional Budget Office reported that repealing the bill is going to cost the federal government tens of billions of dollars over the period of years.  I think that will be called into question."
