Biography

Donna Wakefield is an associate professor at NLU in the Department of Diversity in Learning and Teaching. She is program coordinator for the special education program and for the alternative certification special education program. Her work focuses on children with exceptional learning needs. Dr Wakefield began her career over 30 years ago as a speech-language pathologist working in schools in the greater Chicagoland area. She also has an Illinois Learning Behavior Specialist I Certificate. She has taught students with severe language and behavioral needs and has been an inclusion facilitator as well as an assistive technology specialist. She is past president of the Illinois Network for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. In addition to teaching multiple courses in the Special Education program, she presents a variety of workshops. Some important topics she covers in these well-attended workshops are assistive technology, adapting assessment instruments for individuals with exceptional learning needs, the portrayal of individuals with special needs in children's and young adult literature and making books accessible to individuals with exceptional learning needs.
