Biography

Harry Ross joined National-Louis University in September 2001 and was elected department chair in June 2005. Prior to joining the NLU faculty, Ross had been a teacher at Evanston Township and Lake Forest High Schools, and before that, he had been a faculty member in the English Dept. at Northwestern University’s College of Continuing Studies, where he won an annual award for teaching excellence.

Ross regularly writes and presents on the importance of professionalizing teaching and distributing school leadership in order to improve student achievement and sustain school improvement. He currently has a book in press, Thirteen Steps to Teacher Power: Taking Your Career to the Next Level, and he is working with a coalition of CPS principals and teachers to build leadership at nine urban schools. He has written and presented on ways of expanding the secondary English curriculum to motivate students to become lifelong readers. He is currently working with Chicago teachers to implement these curricula, funded by a grant from the Dept. of Education. In addition, Ross is the lead scholar on a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to research and publicize the work of the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project.
