NLEI and NLU partner to meet Latino community’s specific educational needs
November 3, 2009
Last Thursday night marked a rite of passage for over 60 Latino men and women who participated in the National Latino Education Institute (NLEI) 2009 commencement ceremony. In front of a crowd of over 350 family members, friends and teachers, they crossed the stage and became NLEI graduates, prepared to enter the workforce and make their communities proud. That night, they also learned that NLEI is partnering with National-Louis University (NLU) to help them earn a college degree in the same place they have been studying—and within the same supportive environment.

U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Partnership grant will create Chicago Teacher Pipeline
October 15, 2009
Four universities which house Chicago's largest elementary teacher preparation programs have received a Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create the Chicago Teacher Pipeline Partnership (CTPP) and develop a pipeline of high-quality teachers for Chicago Public Schools (CPS). 

The College of Education at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) will serve as the fiscal agent and lead partner of CTPP, which will team UIC, Loyola University Chicago, National-Louis University (NLU) and Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) with CPS and 20 high-need CPS K-8 elementary schools.

NLU partners with Boundless Readers for The Big Read, Chicago Style

It’s a simple idea, really, but one with a lofty goal. Pick a great book of Mexican short stories, present in it in a variety of ethnically relevant and exciting ways, and restore reading to center of the Latino culture. That’s the approach co-sponsors Boundless Readers and National-Louis University (NLU) are taking for The Big Read 2009, Chicago Style, which was made possible by a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Department of Education Awards $2.95 Million Grant to Chicago Partnership to Improve Teacher Quality

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) announced today that it has awarded a $2.95 million Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant to National-Louis University’s (NLU) Institute for Urban Education and the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL). The grant funds an urban teacher residency (UTR) training program that partners NLU and AUSL with Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

Dr. George Litman becomes tenth president of National-Louis University
Thursday, July 23, 2009
Dr. George Litman, who began teaching mathematics at National-Louis University in 1991 after a successful career as a Chicago Public Schools teacher and administrator, has taken office as NLU’s president. From his original post as assistant professor, he quickly rose to senior leadership as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, deputy provost and, for the past two years, as interim provost. Litman is the tenth president in NLU’s 123-year history.

Litman succeeds Dr. Richard J. Pappas, who has been NLU’s president for four years and will soon become president of Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich. NLU’s Board of Trustees appointed Litman as interim president upon Pappas’ departure and during the search for a new president.
