In the wake of the tragic shootings in Tuscon, Ariz., the investigation into the background of suspect Jared Loughner has included his time spent at Pima Community College in Tuscon. The Arizona Republic reported that Loughner had multiple run-ins with police for causing distractions in classrooms and the library. According to the report, Loughner created a bizarre YouTube video declaring the college unconstitutional, resulting in his suspension. Administrators forbade his return until he passed a mental health examination. National Louis University assistant professor Rebecca Lake is available to the media to discuss the role community colleges play providing for the mental health of the student body.

Christine J. Quinn, Ph.D., has been appointed provost of National-Louis University. Quinn will be joining NLU from the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Madison, Wisconsin, where she currently serves as the provost and vice chancellor. In her role, Quinn oversaw Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning, Broadcast and Media Innovation, the Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, and Cooperative Extension. She has secured millions in grant funds from federal, state and local governments, community and university system partners in efforts to support growth of institutional capacity.

National-Louis University Receives National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

On August 6, 2010, National-Louis University was awarded a $149,175 grant through the Landmarks in American History program of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to fund the Chicago’s Lakefront as a Public Place project. Overall, NEH announced $31.5M in grants across 41 states. Eight grants were awarded in Illinois, with five specifically in Chicago.

NLU receives i3 grant

National-Louis University is one of 15 universities slated to work with 1,500 schools across 40 states under this five-year, $45,593,170 Investing in Innovation (i3) grant project awarded on August 5, 2010. Under this project, the participating universities will be able to offer financial support to improve instruction in the lowest-performing schools that opt to implement Reading Recovery, a research-based short-term literacy intervention for the lowest-achieving first graders.
