The Illinois Middle School Endorsement Classes

The State of Illinois defines a middle grades teacher as one who teaches in grades 5-8 and has fifty percent or more or his or her teaching assignment comprised of a single subject area of instruction. To teach in a middle school classroom, teachers must hold a valid elementary (K-9) or secondary (6-12) certificate and have a minimum of 18 semester hours (30qh) of coursework in the content area in which they are assigned to teach.
NLU Reading Department's 2009 Shaw Fund for Literacy Publication Awards

The Shaw Fund for Literacy focuses on developing elementary reading specialists, classroom teachers, paraprofessionals and volunteers to work in Chicago Public Schools and the surrounding metropolitan area. The award was given to one faculty member and one graduate of the Reading program.
NLU/AUSL Urban Teacher Residency Model Gains National Recognition

NCE Dean Alison Hilsabeck discussed the urban teacher preparation program NLU created with Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) during two presentations with national authorities on education at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) conference in Chicago in February. During a session entitled "Promising Solution to Pressing Problems," President and CEO of the Center for Teaching Quality Barnett Berry praised NLU for having the closest higher education partnership around an urban teacher residency program of any in the country. Both sessions were well-attended by deans of education and other leaders in teacher preparation.
Blachowicz Receives National Center for Educational Research Grant

Camille Blachowicz, Professor of Education and Director of the Reading Program, is co-principal investigator of a 3-year grant awarded by National Center for Educational Research. Directed by Dr. James Baumann of the University of Wyoming, the grant entitled “Development of a Multifaceted, Comprehensive Vocabulary Instructional Program for the Upper Elementary Grades,” will develop an instructional program for a comprehensive approach to vocabulary instruction in grades 4 and 5.

Dr. Mary Kay Moskal to be Visiting Distinguished Professor of Literacy

Dr. Mary Kay Moskal, co-author of Partnering for Fluency, will be this summer’s Visiting Distinguished Professor of Literacy. Moskal is associate professor of education at Saint Mary's College of Moraga, California, where she teaches both pre-service and graduate students. She is the Program Director of Reading and Language Arts and the Director of the Literacy Learning Reading Clinic. Mary Kay has authored and coauthored articles in the areas of fluency and student self-managed fluency development and the book, Partnering for Fluency.

Meet Brisbane Rouzan

He doesn’t quite leap tall buildings in a single bound but the person affectionately known as Bris to his colleagues does seem to be able to find ways to get lots of problems solved. Brisbane Rouzan, the University’s Student Ombudsman (USO) is a dispute resolution practitioner, whose main responsibility is to provide assistance to NCE/NLU students who are trying to resolve problems and deal with specific issues related to their educational experience.
