TIE585W Digital Storytelling for Teachers
(1 sh — CRN 91118) at NLU in Wheeling.
Saturday, October 8 and Saturday, October 15, from 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Participants will experience the process of developing and conveying a story through digital media including still images, animation, video, and music. This workshop is intended for participants with a wide range of technology knowledge and skills, who will work in a collaborative and engaged learning environment to learn more about the application of digital storytelling in their curriculum. Prerequisite(s): None. 1 semester hour
TIE585AL Developing and Facilitating Online Learning Experiences
(1 sh — CRN 91117) ONLINE.
October 31 — November 11
This workshop is designed as an introductory experience for classroom teachers who are interested in facilitating online learning. Participants will learn basic online instructional design, how to develop an interactive, online learning community and create individual and collaborative learning projects, and assess online learning. Prerequisite(s): None. 1 semester hour

TIE Workshops
TIE Workshops are offered each quarter to meet the need for TIE majors and nonTIE majors for electives, and also to offer concentrated experiences related to specific tools or emergent issues in the field. The workshops described below provide a sample of those that may be offered. New workshops are also developed periodically to reflect trends in the education technology field. TIE can also offer or create workshops for graduate credit for any school, district, or group that wants specialized training in technology in education. Contact the program director to discuss details.
- TIE584G Integrating Photoshop Elements in the Curriculum (1SH)
Students and teachers commonly make use of digital cameras to create images that enhance student projects and enliven teacher created materials. Participants in this workshop will learn to use image editing software and apply design basics to improve the appearance of still images. In addition, they will explore curricular applications with attention to related information literacy and social/legal issues.

- TIE584H Integrating iLife Applications in the Curriculum (1SH)
The students of today belong to a digital generation. We see our children effortlessly manipulate electronic games, digital music players, digital movie players, and create digital content for their learning as well as entertainment. The sights and sounds that excite and inspire students can now be brought effortlessly into the classroom with iLife—a highly integrated software suite featuring the latest versions of Apple's award-winning iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, and iDVD, and now, GarageBand. iLife helps your students make the most of digital movies, photos, and music in school projects and presentations. Teaching and learning become more relevant, students are more engaged, and their creativity soars. To be held in the MAC lab.

- TIE584J Engaged Learning with Technology (1SH)
Participants will explore ways in which technology can be integrated in the school curriculum and to encourage students to become more actively engaged in their learning. At a minimum, participants must possess the basic computer skills to independently use a word processor, internet browser, email and search engine. Ability to use spreadsheet and presentation software would also be helpful. This workshop will meet over a minimum of 15 clock hours.

- TIE584K Weaving Web-based Projects into Your Classroom (1SH)
Participants will learn the key components of the WebQuest model for internet-based projects, and will work throughout the course to develop a WebQuest that can be used in the classroom. This course will also explore effective search strategies and techniques to evaluate internet resources. This workshop will meet over a minimum of 15 clock hours. At a minimum, participants must possess the basic computer skills to independently use a word processor, internet browser, email and search engine. Ability to use spreadsheet and presentation software would also be helpful.

- TIE584L Enhancing Social Studies Through Technology (1SH)
Participants will learn to enhance social studies teaching and learning by integrating computers, the Internet, and a wealth of other technologies in the curriculum. They will learn how to use Internet resources for the effective teaching and learning of social studies and to develop criteria for the selection and use of technology in their school's social studies program. This workshop will meet over a minimum of 15 clock hours. At a minimum, participants must possess the basic computer skills to independently use a word processor, internet browser, email and search engine. Ability to use spreadsheet and presentation software would also be helpful.

- TIE585A Integrating Podcasting in the Curriculum (1SH)
The innovation of distributing audio files and enhanced audio files through the internet technology known as Real Simple Syndication (RSS) has taken the world of technology by storm. Known as PodCasting, this innovation has become the fastest growing technology use in history. Educators and students have the potential not only to be consumers of the information delivered through PodCasting, but also information producers. Educators participating in this workshop will become familiar with the nature and innovation, learn how to create and distribute educational content via PodCasting, and develop strategies for integrating PodCasting into their curricular area.

- TIE585C Using Technology in Teaching Science (1SH)
Students will explore and evaluate a variety of computer-based technologies for teaching science in the elementary and middle school classroom. They will develop criteria for making curricular decisions for including technology in school science programs. Students will explore how computers and technology improve science literacy and help the visualization of scientific concepts and principles.
Prerequisites: None. This workshop is not intended for students in the Technology in Education program.
- TIE585L Using Technology in Teaching Mathematics (1SH)
Students will explore and evaluate a variety of computer-based technologies for teaching mathematics in the elementary and middle school classroom. They will develop criteria for making curricular decisions for including technology in school math programs. Students will explore how computers and technology support and enhance math instruction and assist in the visualization of mathematics concepts.

- TIE585N The Worldwide Web as an Educational Resource (1SH)
Using a World Wide Web Browser, students will explore and search the vast informational resources of the Internet. Students will develop instructional activities which appropriately integrate telecommunications on the Information Superhighway into the curriculum and consider the ethical issues involved in tapping this virtual library of information resources.

- TIE585X Using Handheld Computers in the Classroom (1SH)
Participants will examine and experience the use of handheld computers. Basic navigation, management, maintenance, peripherals, curricular applications, and instructional strategies will be discussed. Participants will reflect on the benefits of and challenges to implementing handhelds in the P-12 classroom for assessment, instruction, and differentiation.

Interactive white boards represent technology-teaching tools that provide opportunities for increased student engagement. This workshop will provide students with hands-on experience on the use of Interactive Whiteboards and how to effectively integrate them into the learning environment.

- TIE585AC Integrating Web 2.0 Applications in the classroom (1SH)
User generated content has driven the current wave of technology innovation delivered via the Internet. Many web-based applications, hereby known as Web 2.0 applications, have been developed in recent years, serving as a platform for social communication and collaboration. During this workshop, teachers will explore various online resources with a focus on implications for both professional and personal productivity. Participants will explore items such as wikis, podcasts, blogs, newsreaders, maps, start pages, and online services for sharing documents, pictures and slideware presentations and will develop insight into how these applications can be used in the classroom with students.

- TIE585AE Google Applications in Education (1SH)
During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn and create projects and lessons using resources available free from Google. Learn strategies for incorporating iGoogle for content management, Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Sky for inquiry-based projects, develop your own customizable search engine for your class, and create collaborative projects with Google Docs.

- TIE 585AH Multimedia Projects Using Alice (1SH)
Increase student interactivity with multimedia projects and games using Alice Software. Alice is a free, innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. During the workshop, students will learn how to use Alice programming language to create curriculum and standards based interactive projects and activities.

- TIE 585AI Screencasting in the Classroom (1SH)
Want to create short video tutorials and instructions for your students? A screencast is a digital recording and narration of activities on your computer screen. Save step-by-step demonstrations and instructions as support materials and then distribute them to your students. During this hands-on workshop, students will learn the basics of how to design, develop, and upload a variety of screencasts.
