We have exciting news! We upgraded the NLU Online Campus on December 16th to D2L "Continuous Delivery".  The changes from this upgrade are not major and mostly improve workflow and usability. View the Academic Computing blog for an upcoming list of improvements to D2L with this upgrade!

Student Orientations for D2L and Online Learning:

The following orientation videos and handouts are designed to not only introduce you to the NLU Online Campus (D2L), but also to help you succeed as an online student. Learn specific tips and strategies to get the most out of your online course. 

  • Required Technical Specifications
    The Required Technical Specifications document provides the minimum technology and computer literacy requirements for NLU students.
  • NLU Online Campus (Desire2Learn) Orientation
    The NLU Online Campus orientation shows you how to log into the system, set up your personal preferences, and navigate your online course content.

  • NLU Online Learning Orientation  
    The NLU Student Online Orientation provides strategies for how to succeed as an online learner. In addition, you will learn about many of the academic and technical resources NLU has available for students.

  • Student D2L Demo Course:
    In this Online Campus demonstration course, you will learn how to submit assignments, access course content, and attempt quizzes in a safe online practice environment. Dive in and gain the experience you need to be successful in any of your online or blended classes! To enter the demo course, select the link above, this will take you to the NLU D2L login screen. On the NLU D2L Login Screen use these credentials: Username: demostudent, Password: demostudent.

What's New in D2L Version 10.5?

We upgraded our Desire2Learn Online Campus to version 10.5. You may notice that D2L has a few new features, including the new Pulse mobile app (for iOS and Android), which helps you stay up to date on course due dates, and provides an at-a-glance view of your upcoming assignments. Additionally, D2L Content's "Course Schedule" feature keeps track of upcoming course work and even points out any past due work.

‌The Classlist Tool

The Classlist tool enables you to view who's enrolled in your course, check users' online statuses, send email or pager messages, view shared locker files, and read their blogs if they have them.

Your D2L Account Settings: 

D2L Personal Settings includes four areas: your Profile, Notifications, Account Settings, and Progress. Profile is an area where you can upload an image, and share information about yourself that others can see in the Classlist. Notifications is an area where you can set up alerts concerning course activities. Account Settings is an area you can customize as to how D2L is formatted for your view.  Progress is an area that contains reports of your course progress.

‌D2L Student Mobile Applications

The D2L Pulse and Binder mobile apps are designed specifically to work with the D2L and the NLU Online Campus system. Both apps are available on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Introducing Pulse, a mobile app that enables you to keep track of your workload, schedule, and grades. Watch the tutorial below to learn how to look at your courses, see what assignments are coming up, and add your own personal milestones.

Binder Tablet App (For Web, iPad, or Android devices)
The Binder tablet app enables you send PDF and Microsoft Office documents from the NLU Online Campus to Binder.Binder allows you to make notes, annotations and comments on documents, on your tablet device.

Navigate the Course Home Page and Content

The Course Home Page is where you can access Announcements and Course Updates, Discussions, the Dropbox, Grades and more! Course content is where you go to view course materials, such as the syllabus, lecture notes, readings and more.

Participate in Discussions

The Discussions tool is a collaboration area to post, read, and reply to messages on different topics, share thoughts about course materials, ask questions, share files, or work with your peers on assignments and homework. Recently D2L's discussion tool had some significant changes due to the upgrade to D2L version 10.3, to learn more click on the tutorial links below.

The Dropbox tool enables you to submit assignments in Learning Environment, eliminating the need to mail, fax, or email assignments. To learn how to upload your assignment to a dropbox folder click on the links below.

Uploading an Assignment to a Dropbox with Turnitin: 

When you are submitting papers to the Dropbox, your instructor may use Turnitin. Turnitin is an online plagiarism detection service. It compares your papers to a large database of writings and looks for matching text.

View Grades and Feedback

Use the Grades tool to check your grades on assignments and tests. You can see your individual grades and comments, as well as your final grade and the grade formula used to evaluate you if your grades are released.  The dropbox is where you submit assignments, and it is also where you can feedback from your instructor about the files you submit to the dropbox.  To learn how to view grades and dropbox feedback the tutorials below.

The email tool in D2L allows you to send and receive emails within the D2L Learning Environment. You can spell check your email message and send attachments. You can also organize your received  email using folders and store email addresses using the Address Book. The email tool in D2L does not allow emails to be sent to external email address, including the external NLU My Portal addresses.

Participate in a Group

If your instructor divides the class into groups, use the Groups tool to possibly enroll in a group, or view the group(s) in which you are enrolled as well as the other members of your group. The Groups tool is used to create group work areas for you and your peers. 

D2L also has a tool called Wiggio, where you can set up your own groups, share files, manage a group calendar and more.

Taking a Quiz:

The D2L Quiz tool allows you to take a quiz, review your quiz results, and depending on your instructor's selections, see the class statistics for a quiz.  To learn more about quizzes‌ including how to interpret quiz information, how to take a quiz, saving your progress, and submitting and seeing the results of your quiz and feedback, please view the video and pdf guides below.

Build Your ePortfolio

The ePortfolio tool enables you to build a collection of digital artifacts that you can share with others. The D2L ePortfolio is linked right inside of D2L, so it is easy to find. Because of that, it will be easy to share items with others. You can use the ePortfolio tool to put together a sample of your work, or to demonstrate your achievements to a potential employer.
