"Introduction to the Profession and the Craft of Teaching" Course at National Louis University
Have you ever dreamed of becoming a teacher, but wondered how the profession really works and what it takes to succeed? This course at Chicago's oldest, largest, and best-established teacher preparation university will guide you through making the right decision about whether this vitally important profession is for you. And if you complete the course and are admitted to National Louis University's Masters in Teaching degree program, you will have earned 3 credits toward completing the degree. *
Course content will comprehensively address the key factors in teaching today:
- Trends and debates in the teaching profession
- Social, cultural, political, and economic forces in American education
- How the K-12 sector works (regulation, certification, policy)
- Developing a personal philosophy and approach to teaching
The course will also include a fifteen-hour field experience that
puts each participant in a teaching setting.

at National Louis University
- This course is for new students only—not for those currently enrolled at National Louis University.
- Completion of this course does not constitute or guarantee admission to any National Louis University degree program.
- The 15 hour field experience and a passing grade are required for those who aim to apply academic credit from the course toward an MAT degree at NLU.
