Reading & Language (Ed.D., Ed.S.)
National College of Education

Program Description:

The NLU doctoral program in Reading & Language is designed to prepare you for school-based leadership positions, advanced clinical work or college teaching. Our curriculum blends theory and practical experiences; rigorous coursework; and carefully supervised internships in clinical supervision, teaching, research, staff development and evaluation. The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program is designed for students who wish to do advanced level work without undertaking the dissertation.

How You Will Learn:

Reading & Language is taught using a cohort model, which means you will go through the program with the same group of 12-20 students. NLU graduates like the cohort model because of the support and friendships provided by their fellow students throughout the program.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to design, implement and evaluate teaching practices in reading and language.
  • An in-depth knowledge of language development, early reading acquisition, comprehension, writing and staff development.
  • How to connect theories and research on language, cognition and learning to instruction.
  • How to supervise and coordinate reading programs.
  • How to communicate research results and data analysis.
  • How to provide assistance in the area of staff development.

Where You Can Take the Program:

At the NLU campus in Wheeling.
