Curriculum and Instruction (M.Ed., C.A.S.)

Program Description:

Practitioners continue to face increasing expectations for ensuring that learners have appropriate content-rich experiences in multiple disciplines and that these experiences positively impact learner achievement.

The mission of the Curriculum and Instruction Program is to improve the ability of practitioners to support all learners through development of expertise in pertinent content areas and appropriate instructional pedagogy.

The NLU master's and certificate of advanced study in Curriculum and Instruction are designed for certified teachers and qualified non-certified preK-12 educational professionals who want to expand their skills and understandings in one of the following concentrations:

Please note that each concentration has the same core requirements. For a complete list of courses, please view the C&I Curriculum as well as the curriculum for your chosen concentration.

How You Will Learn:

The program core courses are tiered for prerequisites and are offered in a three term sequence. Other courses, depending on the concentration, are offered within cohorts and/or through traditional on-campus registration. The cohort format is designed for a group of 12-20 students who enroll in a pre-determined set of courses.  The traditional on-campus option allows students to pace their own course studies. In both instances, the careful sequencing of courses provides opportunity for support and development of collaborative relationships of fellow students throughout the program.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to integrate theory and practice.
  • How to make instructional decisions that support the learning process.
  • How to understand and apply relevant academic content.
  • How to accommodate diverse needs of learners.
  • How to collaborate productively.
  • How to critically reflect and articulate professional belief.
  • How to advocate for productive change.

Where You Can Take the Program:

At NLU’s campuses in Chicago, Elgin, Lisle, Skokie (North Shore) and Wheeling.
