Senate Highlights

August 20, 2003

  • Fred Widlak read into the record a memorial statement praising the extraordinary contributions of Michael W. Louis to the university and called for a moment of silence in his honor. Michael Louis died in Arizona on July 31, 2003.
  • Reports were received from Curt McCray, Brian Fabes, and Tony Chaitin. It was noted that the university had a positive balance of $1 million at the end of July, attributable largely to the College of Management and Business. The Provost reported significant achievements of faculty who have received outside funding for their academic work and research.
  • A task-force has been named to examine the rationale for the large number of non-tenure-track faculty positions at NLU and to determine whether the interests of the university might not be better served by moving many of these faculty into tenure-track positions. This task force will make a recommendation back to the Senate by the end of the calendar year.
  • A Senate Plan for 2003-2004 was adopted (attached) and will be posted on the Senate web site. The Senate Plan includes charges to each of the Senate committees.
  • It was decided that the Senate will continue to meet on the third Wednesday of the month in Chicago from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Senate meetings are open to the university community and can be accessed in the ITV room in Evanston, Wheeling, and Wheaton. Minutes of the Senate meetings will be posted following their approval.
