Disability Studies and Inclusive Education: Implications for Practice?

The National-Louis University National College of Education will host the 7th Annual DSE Conference at our Chicago campus, April 7-9, 2007.

Disability Studies in Education (DSE) is a special interest group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). For the last five years, this annual event has attracted researchers, professors, teachers, and other individuals who actively seek to change traditional theory and practice around disability within the fields of education and rehabilitation services.

This year, the conference continues its custom of bringing together scholars, researchers, teachers, and agents of social change, all united through their interest in theorizing, politicizing, and reconceptualizing disability within the field of education. For more information on the theme for this year’s conference, please refer to the proposal section of this web-site.

The DSE's legacy in honoring promising and significant research, as well as innovative practice within Disability Studies in Education continues with the inclusion of several highlighted conference features: The Senior Scholar Award, The Junior Scholar Award, a special session on the History of Disability Studies in Education, invited keynote speakers, and special entertainment.

We are excited to announce that this year’s Senior Scholar Award dinner will be held Saturday, April, 7, at the Arts Club of Chicago and is possible thanks to a generous donation by Lisa Lee, Director of the Jane Addams Hull House Museum. Since 1916, The Arts Club of Chicago has been a preeminent exhibitor of international contemporary art, a forum for both established and emerging artists, and a celebrated venue for performers from around the world. Located just off the Miracle Mile and just south of Water Tower Place on Ontario, The Arts Club will be a lovely venue for our afternoon plenary session and award dinner. Plans are in the works for a small exhibit of disability art with opportunities for conference participants to interact with the artists during a wine and cheese reception prior to dinner.

We understand that this year the DSE conference is held on Passover weekend. To accommodate registrants who keep kosher during Passover we will ensure that all conference meals will have vegetarian options and matzo crackers. Those individuals looking for kosher restaurants in Chicago may find them at http://juf.org/guide_jewish_living/.
