Workshop And Testing Information

Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT)

The Center for Academic Development, in collaboration with the National College of Education (NCE), offers a test-taking strategies workshop to NLU students preparing to take the APT exam. During the workshop, students learn effective test-taking and writing strategies presented by a CAD instructor. This is followed with a question and answer session led by an NCE faculty member. Students preparing for Illinois Certification Tests also benefit from attending this workshop. Workshops are offered prior to each scheduled ICTS exam date and are held at the Wheeling and Chicago campuses. For further information on workshop content or dates, please contact the CAD at 312-261-3374.

Basic Skills Review

CAD Basic Skills Reviews are for those students who must take the Illinois Basic Skills Test for teacher certification. The reviews are designed to introduce the types of questions that may be encountered on the test, provide suggestions on how to answer those questions, and review skills that attendees may not have used for years. The main goal of the reviews is to prepare students to maximize their scores on the test. The dates for the sessions and more information about them can be found at IBST Reviews, or by calling 312-261-3840.

Criterion on-line writing assessment

Criterion is used by NLU as an entrance examination for graduate programs in the College of Management and Business and some programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a web-based service that provides evaluation of students’ writing skills, so students should be aware that they will be typing their essays on a computer. More information about the Criterion assessment can be obtained at Criterion Information.

English Competency Information

The English Competency Test is a one-hour essay exam required of most National-Louis University undergraduates. The test gives undergraduate students the opportunity to demonstrate that they possess minimum college-level writing skills. These skills include competence, organization, unity, coherence, and mechanics. The CAD offers workshops that help students prepare for the English Competency Test.
The workshops have three main objectives:
  • Answer some common questions about the English Competency Test
  • Walk students through some simple, test-taking strategies
  • Show students how to prepare for the English Competency Test

For Workshop dates and locations, please contact the CAD at CyberCAD@nl.edu.

For a brief list of facts about the test, click ENGLISH COMPETENCY TEST QUICK FACTS

For more detailed information about preparing for the test, click ENGLISH COMPETENCY TEST INFORMATION

Test dates and locations are determined by the English Department and are published in the current quarter's class schedule. They can be viewed at ECT Dates.

FastForward Information

Students entering an NLU degree-completion program (Applied Behavioral Sciences (ABS), Health Care Leadership (HCL), Bachelor of Science in Management (BSM), or Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems (BSMIS) are required to attend a FastForward orientation session prior to beginning their program. During the orientation, the student’s writing abilities will be assessed, and students will be given important information about NLU.

The purpose of the writing assessment is to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses so that students can take advantage of the academic support that is available to help them meet their goals. Students should not worry unduly about the assessment; however, they may want to brush up on their writing skills before coming to the session. Click on FastForward for more information prior to the writing assessment.

Skills Assessment

All students admitted to undergraduate programs take skills assessment tests prior to advising and registration. The content for the skills assessment focuses on three basic skill areas -- reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. The results of the skills assessment are used to match students' current skill levels with appropriate NLU coursework, and to aid students and academic advisors in planning each student's goals and schedule.

For more information about the skills assessments or to see a list of the dates when skills assessments are offered, click Skills Assessment information.

Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal

The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal is used for determining admission to some graduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences at National-Louis University. It measures the test taker’s ability to infer, identify assumptions, reason deductively, and analyze arguments by presenting questions that address everyday issues. The Watson-Glaser test is offered at each of the Chicago area NLU campuses, and advance registration is required. To access the schedule of test dates, please call 800 443-5522 ext. 3280. A recorded message will give that information, after which you may tell us when and where you prefer to test. You will be registered once you receive a confirmation call regarding your test location and time. For more information about the test, click Watson-Glaser info.
