Transfer Guides

Make sure transfer courses will fulfill NLU requirements

NLU provides flexibility in transferring courses from other accredited institutions. While some requirements must be fulfilled at NLU, many courses can be taken elsewhere. Always check with your NLU academic advisor before selecting a course to take elsewhere.

NLU provides an online transfer guide for most area community colleges. You may be able to use transfer courses from other institutions not in the transfer guide via a substitution waiver. You should work with your academic advisor to discuss this.

Steps for transferring a course to National-Louis:

  1. Find the class that you'd like to take at another institution. Verify through the NLU transfer guides and your academic advisor that you need this course. The only way to be certain that the course will fulfill the requirement that you need is if it appears on the NLU transfer guide or if you receive written approval from your NLU academic advisor.
  2. Take the course. If you receive a grade of C or better, it will transfer to NLU. Note that there are certain courses required by education majors that may require a grade of B or better to fulfill the requirement.
  3. Have an official transcript from the other institution sent to NLU upon the completion of the course and the posting of your grade.

If you plan to take a course at NLU simultaneously with a course at another institution, a consortium agreement may allow you to have your financial aid cover the cost of courses at multiple institutions at the same time. Talk to NLU Student Finance for more information.
