Acceptance into an accredited National-Louis University teacher certification program requires that students participate in 100 hours of school site or clinical experiences under the guidance of a cooperating teacher.

The Illinois State Board of Education defines clinical experiences "as that part of the professional preparation program enabling candidates preparing for certificated roles to acquire practical experience along with theoretical knowledge prior to entering into the full responsibilities of the role for which they are seeking certification." Candidates are expected to demonstrate beginning (Practicum I) or continuing (Practicums II & III) competencies in specific categories. Undergraduate student participate in Practicums I, II, and III while graduate student requirements include only Practicum II & III.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is the culmination of all the coursework, observations, and certification requirements of the National College of Education and the State of Illinois. In effect, it is the final exam that tests for everything that goes before you enter the teaching profession. Therefore, the office of School-Relations' clinical placement staff looks to carefully place each student in a school environment that is enriching, diverse, and supportive.

The clinical placement coordinators with your advisors and teachers want to help you through the application process, support you during the student teaching experience, and celebrate with you as you become the teacher of young people you've set out to be.
