Bizar, Marilyn
Professor, Secondary Education
Research Interests:  Urban Education, Best Practice Instruction, High School Reform

Marilyn believes that dramatic changes can and should be made in America’s middle and high schools, changes that can transform the lives and futures of our students. In the secondary education department, we seek not merely to populate the school system with skillful teachers, but also to recreate the system. Marilyn's goal is to train new teachers who can bring fresh ideas to a struggling system, who can lead the way to change, implement new standards, enact “best practice” instruction, design progressive assessments, model the principles of democracy and serve an increasingly diverse student body.

   Dr. Sy Karlin

Karlin, Sy
Professor, Secondary Education; Program Coordinator for Secondary Education Department, Teach For America (TFA)

Research Interests:  Reading Strategies, Questioning Strategies, Wireless Environment, Service Learning

Sy believes the role of any instructor is to provide leadership in an area where education and many school systems are reforming and restructuring the way students learn. More and more research shows that students and adults learn in a variety of different modes and have different learning styles. Many of the courses that are offered in today’s school districts provide students with the opportunity to take interdisciplinary courses of study, internet programs, independent study, night school options, correspondence courses, and individualized learning programs. It is the responsibility of teaching staff to provide leadership in all these areas based on the needs of students with alternative learning styles. Learning options are all strongly linked to assessment based on best practices and the different ways one learns. I work through these various options to improve instruction in a way that meets the learning styles of all students.

Sullivan, Scott
Professor, Secondary Education
Research Interests:  Media Literacy, Media Education, School Reform, Small High School Design, Reflective Teaching Practice, Technology and Teaching Pedagogy, Educational Policy and Politics

With research showing that kids learn more from the media culture than they do from school, it’s incumbent upon educators to begin examining the impact of media on the lives of children and adults we work with each day. Schools seem to be behind the curve in adapting technology, being proactive in reform movements, and having an active voice in policy matters. Scott believe that teachers need to practice reflectively, teach passionately, and campaign endlessly for the continuous improvement of public education and the betterment of our society.
