ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE LEVEL EDUCATION MAT YEAR LONG INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Year Long Internship Program is designed so that school-based faculty can work with NCE/NLU interns in elementary and middle school classrooms. It is our belief that these relationships create opportunities that benefit children, our students, faculty and the larger school community. Some of the experiences and relationships our students enjoy as a result of the program include:
  • Experience in a classroom for a full year, leading to better understanding of other work of teachers and the socio-emotional and academic needs of children.
  • Collaboration in curriculum design, integration and planning, and assessment.
  • Understanding of the culture of a school including children and parents, faculty and staff.
  • Appreciation and planning for the diverse needs of children.
  • Support by a mentor faculty member, university supervisor and seminar instructor.
Internship students are different from traditional classroom aides in that cooperating teachers make a larger commitment to bringing students into the teaching profession. These highly qualified teachers want the additional opportunity and responsibilities of mentoring our students.
