Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL)
The
Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) partners with National-Louis University (NLU) to deliver a redesigned Master of Arts in Teaching degree in an innovative spiral curriculum in which practice and theory are woven, thereby providing a powerful integration between the ten-month Teaching Residency and the twelve months of graduate level coursework. NLU professors teach the coursework at the AUSL training academies (professional development schools), and deliver a unique spiral curriculum that directly addresses the needs of urban school children.
Program participants, called residents, are selected through a rigorous application process and spend one-year working full-time in classrooms of Chicago Public School mentor teachers. While gaining clinical classroom experience, residents earn a full Master of Arts in Teaching from National-Louis University through their participation in an intensive twelve-month teacher preparation program. Graduates of the NLU/AUSL program contract to work in an underperforming Chicago Public School for a minimum of five years.
