PROFESSIONAL STATEMENT
I find a common theme woven through my career as an educator:  the nurturing of small learning communities.   As a high school English teacher, a college composition-and-literature instructor, an administrator at two universities, and an NLU graduate faculty member in Educational Leadership, I sense that my associations with students and colleagues have always been about collectively looking ahead, seeking growth, setting goals, supporting each other, exploring ideas, working through frustrations, and celebrating achievements as courses conclude and elated students jubilantly walk across the Commencement stage.
Peter Senge defines “learning organization” as “a group of people who are continually enhancing their capabilities to create what they want to create”.    As an educator, I’ve felt grateful for an abundance of creative opportunities to facilitate group learning in high school language and media-studies classes; undergraduate English, communications, and film-study courses; resident centers for undergraduate study on American military bases; NLU’s regional campuses; and in graduate cohort groups pursuing advanced degrees.
I envision graduate studies in Educational Leadership as evolving dynamically and profoundly into 21st century forms of community, influenced by social networking technologies, refined professional standards, and synergistic organizational partnerships.   At NLU, I am gratified to live in a professional community where colleagues collaborate with ease across geographic distances and leadership candidates persuasively demonstrate competencies in electronic portfolios with coordinated assistance from teams of university and school district partners.
