Coursework in Health Education
Degree students must become admitted to the University (call extension 5151 for application materials), and, after admission, must meet with a faculty advisor to develop a graduate study plan. The program description provided below relates most specifically to the M.Ed. option with the Health Education endorsement. Those interested in the C.A.S. or M.S.Ed. are encouraged to contact the Health Education Coordinator or the Curriculum & Instruction Program Director.
The Courses
Masters of Education Degree
The 34 semester hour (sh) M.Ed. requirements are indicated below. These include 14 sh of core courses and 20 sh of Health Education courses.
The required State of Illinois Endorsement courses are indicated by an asterisk (*). Transcript review of each candidate determines specific courses needed for endorsement.

Students choosing to complete the M.Ed. also complete five additional courses. These courses are carefully blended into the program to support and enrich the experience of participating teachers and expand and broaden the contextual applications of program outcomes:
three courses in curriculum and instruction „ CIC503 Curriculum Design and Evaluation; CIC504 Instructional Decision Making; and CIC592 Seminar: Educational Inquiries
one course in cognitive psychology „ EPS541 Cognition and Instruction
an educational research course „ ESR505 Educational Inquiry and Assessment.

Health Education Endorsement
Certified secondary education teachers seeking the Health Education Endorsement are required to have 24 semester hours in coursework (per the Illinois State Board of Education). This includes the 11 sh of the Health Education Concentration courses, as well as at least 10 sh additional Health Education content distributed as follows:
One (1) course in Human Sexuality or Sexuality Education
One (1) course in Drug/Chemical Use and Abuse
Two (2) courses chosen from among the following:
Mental Health
Disease Prevention and Control
Nutrition and Dietary Patterns
Environmental Health / Consumer Health
Safety and Injury Control
Personal Health Practices
