Frequently Asked Questions of the Certification Office

1. When do I apply for certification?
When you have completed or are near to completion of the requirements for certification, submit the application to NLU. Also, to become certified, you must take and receive a passing  score  on the state tests applicable to the certificate that will eventually be issued to you.

2. How long does it take to process the application?
No processing will begin until all required documents have been received and reviewed.  The processing  time of a COMPLETE application depends on the volume of applications received and the quarter.  It takes more time to process   applications during the spring and summer quarters. The end of the quarter and not the last of class determines when your  application will be processed.

3. Do I need to send any particular documents to NLU besides the application?

Be certain to turn in your preclinical observation  logs.  If you have not submitted official transcripts to document completion of deficiencies, please do so at this time. You may send them to the transcript evaluator.  Or, you may Include  them with your application. You do not need to send test scores or any fees to NLU.

4. Do I need to submit the test scores to the university?
No.  But be sure to take the required tests for your particular program.

5. How long are test scores valid?
The required test scores are now valid for ten years.

6. How do I register to take a state test?
The website is:
www.icts.nesinc.com  On this site, you will find useful information such as test dates, test sites, etc. You may also call (800) 239-8107 or (413) 256-2870

7. Can I fax my application to the university?
No.  The ISBE requires an original copy of the application.

8. If I want the state to know that I will have my degree, how do I apply for it?
The website address is:
www.nl.edu/oar

9. What endorsements am I going to receive on my certificate?
Students in the secondary education program will receive high school endorsements. The courses, MLE500 and MLE502, must be taken to receive middle school endorsements.

10. What are the requirements to obtain a certificate in Educational Leadership?
Complete the application for School Service Personnel.  Also, submit a letter on official school letterhead  that documents completion  of two years of teaching experience or two years of administrative experience.

11. While I am in the process of getting approved for certification with the state, I will be looking for a teaching position.  If I have not received my teaching license yet, what do I tell a potential employer about the status of my certification?
Once you apply with ISBE, a potential employer will be able to access ECS and verify the status of your certification.

Note:  When you receive an application for certification from the university, you will be given an instruction sheet that will answer many questions about the processing of the application.  And, when your official (approved) application is returned to you to continue the process of becoming  certified  with the state, you will be given more instructions as to how to proceed.
