W. Jason Stegemoller is an assistant professor of ESL/Bilingual education at National Louis University in Illinois. He grew up in a bilingual community in southern New Mexico. He has taught English as a second language to children and adults, and he has worked in diverse contexts in Finland, England, New York, Michigan, and Illinois. He is a co-director of the ESL STEM Success Grant, which is a federal National Professional Development grant funded through the Department of Education's Office of English Language Acquisition. He works with project personnel to engage collaboratively with community partners to provide professional development activities intended to improve instruction for K-12 English learners and assist teachers in meeting high professional standards in teaching English learners. He has also collaborated on several federally funded research teams. One project explored cross-linguistic transfer in the reading performance of 2nd – 4th grade Spanish-English bilingual children, and another was a longitudinal study of the development of secondary English teachers.

Research and Interests:

I am interested in examining bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-linguistic influences in students with unevenly developed language practices in more than one language. I also want to understand how teachers implement knowledge about bilingualism, biliteracy, and language acquisition. The overarching goal of my research agenda is to explore and illustrate overlapping ways that contexts and previous experiences inform students' and teachers' appropriation of language practices and linguistic knowledge. Current projects include: 1) analysis of bilingual, immigrant students' negotiation of linguistic and cultural identity in academic writing; 2) exploration of monolingual elementary teachers' development of practices that support multilingual learners in tapping into linguistic and cultural resources as they acquire English and learn content.
