Elementary and Secondary schools across the Chicago area are investing in various tablets, such as iPads, because of the immense effect it has been shown to have on students and their learning.  Not only are students excited about using these devices, these devices also offer a huge collection of apps that can focus student's attention on a very specific learning objective. The potential for these devices is still being discovered, but their low-cost, light weight, and ease of use are all reasons why Apple may sell over 150 million of the devices before the end of 2013. The iPad appears to be the most versatile and functional of all tablet devices, and we continue to see schools adopting them in increasing numbers.

National College of Education is dedicated to providing an innovative learning environment, so in response to this trend, we began training our faculty back in Fall of 2011. Our first group of the students who could participate in this iPad-using program started in Fall 2012. This is now expanding from our Elementary Education program to our Special Education and Secondary Education programs.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS:

Option #1: When you enroll in one of NLU’s iPad-enhanced teaching preparation training programs, you can purchase an iPad directly from NLU and it will be provided to you at the beginning of the program. The iPad comes with 32gb, a protective case, a VGA adaptor for projection purposes, and the highly-rated AppleCare+ warranty which covers most problems for two years. Along with this, some of the apps required will be provided free of charge, such as Pages, iMovie, Inspiration, and ComicLife. Not all apps are covered by this option and students may need to purchase additional apps according to the requirement of the course. After paying the initial $790 expense of the iPad through your NLU bill (also covered by financial aid), the iPad becomes the property of the student. If a participant's iPad is lost, stolen or damaged, the participant will need to replace it. Students need to inform their instructor prior to the first day of class if they are choosing this option. Students will sign and complete the iPad Purchase Agreement.

Option #2: If you already own an iPad, it must be an iPad 2 or higher, or an iPad Mini, and have sufficient space to store all classroom required apps. As part of the course materials, students may need to purchase apps according to the requirements of each course. If a participant's iPad is lost, stolen or damaged, the participant will need to replace it.

DAY-TO-DAY USE:

All students are required to bring an iPad 2 or higher, or an iPad Mini to each class. You are expected to maintain it so that it is functional for all assignments. One problem that students need to keep in mind, for example, is having so many music and pictures files on their iPad that they run out of space for new educational apps. Students need to make sure that there is enough space on their iPad so that they can review new apps as recommended by their instructor.

ORIENTATION:

Orientation will provide you with hands-on instruction and an overview of how to get started. This will include setting up email, App Store accounts, maintenance tips, and other basic instructions. The iPad will be provided during this session. All students must attend this orientation.
