Candidate Criteria
Candidates must have a master's degree, experience in a higher educational institution (with a preference for three to five years in a community college), and demonstrated skills in communication and writing consistent with doctoral study.
Admission Process
The CCL program uses a rolling admission policy to ensure all seats are filled with qualified candidates. All application documents are to be received in the Office of Graduate Admissions. To expedite the admission process, review of completed applications will begin on April 1. However, applications are accepted until a week prior to the first course. Notification of admissions will begin May 1. Admission to the CCL doctoral program is highly competitive.
The application for admission includes the following:
- Completed application and non-refundable application fee.
- An official transcript showing completion of a Master’s degree from an accredited institution. Completion of a bachelor’s degree must be verified.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Professional resume.
- Personal statement describing the applicant’s expectations of the program and core beliefs regarding the role of leaders within the community college.
- A writing assignment involving a critical commentary on an article related to the community college.
- A faculty interview.
The final phase of the admission process is an interview that provides an opportunity for applicants to meet the faculty to make certain that the program is compatible with their goals. The faculty is committed to ensuring diversity according to gender, physical ability, and ethnicity.

Timeframe for Annual Admission
- All application documents must be received in the Office of Graduate Admission.
- Review of applications will start April 1, however applications are accepted until a week prior to the first course, or until all the seats are filled.
- Those meeting the requirements will be contacted for an interview with faculty.
- Notification of acceptance into the CCL program by May 1 or after the candidate's successful interview.
Tuition and Fees
- Tuition and fees are set by the University each semester and are subject to change
- Financial aid is available for all qualified students.
Location of Classes
The CCL program rotates class sites in the Chicago Metropolitan area and Chicago Suburbs.
- 1st Year Fall 2006 Cohort - Truman College / NLU
- 2nd Year Fall 2007 Cohort - College of DuPage
- 3rd Year Fall 2008 Cohort - NLU Chicago campus
- 4th Year 2009 Cohort - Harper College
- 5th Year 2010 Cohort - NLU Chicago campus
- 6th Year 2011 Cohort - Moraine Valley Community College
