Professional Resources
The definition of a "Professional" generally includes "participation and leadership" within professional organizations related to ones professional career interests. Professional counselors should belong to and support the work of the professional associations, which advocate on their behalf on the State and National Level. In Illinois, Coalition of Illinois Counselor Organizations (CICO) has been formed to advocate on behalf of counselors and the counseling profession.. This organization of organizations consisting of the Illinois Counseling Association, Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association, Illinois Art Therapy Association, Illinois Rehabilitation Counselors Association, Illinois Member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and the American Dance Therapy Association. Individuals join their own appropriate association and are automatically enrolled in CICO. It is through CICO that the political advocacy for all counselors is conducted, and information is sent from CICO to all association newsletters to keep everyone informed of developments and issues important to counselors in the state. In addition students are encouraged to join other organizations that are consistent with their interest and career direction.
