Robert Benway, Ed.D.
Assistant Professor and Chair, Health Studies Department
Bob has over 30 years professional experience in the health care and higher education industries in a variety of clinical, managerial, executive, and education positions. He started his career as a respiratory therapist, taught in clinical programs, and then tracked his career in management of progressively larger and more complex programs and departments in several hospitals and medical centers, all over eighteen years. He was then promoted to an assistant vice president position, and for the next seven years worked at several other national director and vice president positions. Bob has taught in the undergraduate Health Care Leadership and Masters in Health Services Administration programs for over 5 years. He also teaches in the Applied Behavioral Sciences and Human Services Counseling programs . He has a BS degree in biology from University of Illinois Chicago, a certificate in respiratory therapy from the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, an MBA from Dominican University, and an Ed.D in adult education from National Louis University. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on adult learning following job loss in mid-career workers. Bob's research interests include values based career transitions, adult learning and development, and leadership training in health care. He has given presentations on each of these topics at various professional organizations. He has also published articles in the Suburban Asthma Consortium-American Lung Association of Illinois newsletter. Bob has written curriculum and online curriculum in the areas of professional writing in health care, strategic management in health care, and management of health care organizations. He is a board member of the Suburban Asthma consortium, and serves as a job coach and presenter for Career Transitions Centers of Chicago.
