Adult Education Masters Program
Program Overview
The Master of Adult Education Program is an accelerated, non-traditional program actively employing adult learning theory and principles in its delivery. The goal of the program is to provide learners with the vision and skill needed to facilitate the education and development of adults in a variety of settings. The content of the program addresses the foundations of the field and, building on the prior experiences and skills of the learner, provides a general background in both theoretical and instrumental knowledge. The program is cohort-based where students learn from one anotherıs experiences. Faculty are selected based on their ability to facilitate learning and their background in the field.
Program Design
Learners shape and direct their learning through collaborative and independent inquiries which are grounded in the life and work experiences of each cohort. Through the process of inquiry, the graduate program is able to focus on the unique needs of each student. At the conclusion of the program coursework, inquiries, work and life experience are woven together into whole fabric‹a portfolio which comprehensively demonstrates the unique texture and design of the program for each graduate. To assist the student in the development of an appropriate sequence of courses, an advisor will be appointed upon admission to the program.
Academic Advisors
The roll of advisor includes academic counsel and mentoring. The responsibilities of an advisor include:
- mentoring the student in relation to academic work,
- assisting the student, when appropriate, in the integration of independent inquiries under an overarching theme or interest,
- monitoring a studentıs progress, especially in relation to "I" grades and other interruptions of the studentıs work,
- advising a student in relation to electives (five credits required),
- determining a studentıs need for additional academic support from resource persons within or outside the program,
- providing technical support to students relating to the development of their Graduate Study Plan (9k requires Acrobat Reader), application for graduation, and other logistical hurdles encountered in the program, and
- regularly informing the program director of any changes in the Graduate Study Plan, problems encountered, or need for special assistance.
Advisors are assigned to an entire cohort in order to facilitate communication and the scheduling of meetings of advisor and advisee. Students retain the option of selecting a different advisor by mutual consent of advisor and advisee‹or seeking advice and assistance from any member of the faculty regarding their special areas of interest. To facilitate this interaction with faculty a faculty directory which includes the special skills and interests of both full-time and adjunct faculty (see Faculty below) is regularly updated and distributed.
