Western Suburban Literacy Initiative

The West Suburban Literacy Initiative (WSLI) Partnership between the Fox Valley Reading Council, the National-Louis University (NLU) Reading & Language Department (Lisle), and the NLU Library focuses on the differentiation of literacy instruction for a range of student needs identified in classrooms in the western suburbs. Some of the areas of need include: cultural and linguistic diversity, special needs, gifted, boys, and ELL instruction. Components of the partnership include:
- an annual forum with nationally-known speakers,
- a graduate-level special topics course offered at NLU,
- a partnership with the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage,
- collaborations with District 200 in Wheaton-Warrenville and District 203 in Naperville,
- a WSLI leadership book study group.
An additional focus of the WSLI is the continued development of the NLU Américas collection of bilingual, Spanish and Latino themed children's and young adult books. This collection was featured in two poster sessions presented last fall by Dr. Ruth Quiroa and Barbara Evans: The Big Read (sponsored by the NLU Partnership Office, NLU Latino Initiative and Boundless Readers under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts) and the 8th International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY) Regional Conference in St. Charles, Illinois.
WSLI members participated in scholarly inquiry in two areas: a) the growth/development of teachers, literacy leaders, and administrators taking a CUSD professional development course offered by Dr. Ruth Quiroa entitled: Exploring Latino cultures through Literature K-12; and b) collaborative instruction involving the application of key ideas from this course in focal teachers' classrooms (grades 4-5) with Dr. Sunday Cummins. A partnered presentation on the initial findings of these inquiries and the Américas collection was given by FVRC Board Members (Amy Stuckey, Kim Dillon, Karen Ringas), NLU library faculty (Barbara Evans) and NLU Reading & Language Faculty (Dr. Sunday Cummins, Dr. Susan McMahon) at the International Reading Association Conference, Chicago, May 2010.
